WHY THE NAME “SANDPIPER EMPRESS”?
This home, 1010 Sandpiper, prominently features breeze block throughout. The name for the particular breeze block pattern used in this home is “Empress”. It was, and continues to be, one of the most popular patterns of concrete breeze block and has been used extensively in both commercial and residential architecture.
One of the classic examples of Empress breeze block is the United States Embassy in Delhi, India.
In fact, our courtyard design was inspired by the interior courtyard water feature of this Embassy.
The name “Sandpiper Empress” is our reference to the regal elegance this pattern and material have brought to architecture in hot, intensely sunny environments such as our southern California desert. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
If you look around the Sandpiper community you will see quite a variety of both breeze block (the perforated concrete patterned block) and also shadow wall block, the solid dimensional blocks that are used to contrast with the plain and breeze blocks.
Breeze block is so named because it allows the breeze to pass through. Shadow wall is named for the interesting patterns of shadows it creates throughout the day, as the sun’s angle changes.
